I just realized ufotable's Fate/Zero is officially 10 years old now. That begs the question, when is an anime considered "old"?

I go by the 20-year rule.

Fruits Basket 2001 is now officially old.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Same here. Not only it works well as a psychological barrier, it's also technically the same amount of time that passes between the moment a human being is born and when it's starting to build up his own life, with even maybe raising up a new family.

Anime released before Ashita no Joe are old because animators hadn't mastered the peculiarities of TV animation at that point.

Even Dragon Ball Z isn't that old. If we can see current airing shows, we may find one or two show , or maybe more which has worst animation quality then 90s or even 1985 onward animation. So, imo, old means before Dragon Ball Z.

Fall 2022 is the most Unforgettable anime season of all time

Dated sound quality. Fr, this is the main reason I don't usually watch older anime

Can't go wrong with 20 years since most of us were either not born or children.

Also about the time when anime did a transition.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

When a newcomer to anime proclaims "But it looks old! and so I probably won't like it" that's when a show has officially been dubbed as old to me.

Well it's all upon us, I consider all of those shows which were made before my birth as old one's, so anything before 2000's.

Anime usually target young people.
Yes, older people may like them, but they are not the main target.

So, we can say an anime get old after a generation. 10 Years.
Because, don't expect for teenagers to watch 10 years old anime. They wouldn't understand a thing because from a different time.

It really depends on the viewer's age, i'm 24 so anything 90's and before is considered Old School to me.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

How different is the time period really between now in 2021 and 10 years ago, 2011, as far as what would be portrayed in an anime? Even smartphones have been out since 2007. How much cultural change has there really been which would somehow render it so foreign or unrecognizable? Least of all in an anime which is not even set in modern times.

No bro. Anime from 10 years ago still had old foldable phone represented. Majority of anime from 10 years ago had them.

For example recently I rewatched Tasogare Otome x Amnesia (2012, so it's not 10 years yet) and these were the phones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yElsiMepRg

Mirai Nikki (2011)? Here you go: https://i.imgur.com/980vcNt.jpg

Of course they are examples, I'm not going to check all the anime one by one now. But I remember this clearly because I paid attention to the phones a lot at the time. Majority of the shows had old foldable phone represented 10 years ago.

Teenagers now probably doesn't even know what these are

An easy rule of thumb is to ask yourself do you consider yourself old? If not, then it's pretty difficult to define any anime around your own age or younger as "old."

Personally, I seldom refer to an anime as "old" unless actively comparing it to a newer work or even a reboot due to the vagueness of the term.

Anime is old when the zoomer tumors say so.

I'd only ever call an anime old when the animation/sound is clearly dated.

I consider anything that's finished airing ten or more years ago as old. Oddly enough, continuous long-running series like One Piece (started airing in 1999), would be considered as current in this perspective.

I'd say cel animation. Not a lot of people would say that HxH or Fate/Zero are the first things that come to mind when they think of old anime. I think most people just characterize old shows with cel animation or older art styles, and I can't say I disagree. As for why cel has a small number of votes, it's possible that a lot of people don't know what cel is. Or maybe I'm off on all this idk.

I would say 15 to 20 years or more.
I don't think it's necessary for it to be not talked about to claim an anime is old.

I remember even in the early and mid-2000s there was not as much talk of 80s anime, though much more compared to today. Only Kimagure Orange Road and Maison Ikkoku were very popular. Only mid-90s and later series were popular.
